One delightful 1996 November evening, a small group of Wine
Club Members conducted an impromptu wine room tasting.
- KRUG GRAND CUVEE - Golden - yellow color with a tight small bead.
Aromas of bread dough and citrus. Rich and creamy flavor with an exceptional
long finish.
- TALBOTT WINERY, SLEEPY HOLLOW VINEYARD - MONTEREY 1993 - Pale yellow
color with a distinctive tropical fruit aroma and oak. Very ripe fruit
flavors with integrated oak. Perfectly balanced with a complex long finish.
- E.GUIGAL, CONDRIEU LA DORIANE 1994 - Pale yellow color. Closed aroma
at first showing lots of barrel fermented oak. After 5 minutes in the glass,
intense orange blossom to peach aromas dominate the aroma. A classic CONDIEU
with rich fruit and perfectly balanced acid, with a long smoky finish.
- CORTON CHARLEMAGNE, LOUIS LATOUR 1990 - Gold yellow color. Aroma
began closed with a slight mustiness, but developed beautifully into a
toasty oak aroma with subdued citrus. Lush, rich fruit, very creamy and
perfectly balanced with a long finish.
- JACQUES PRIEUR, LE MONTRACHET 1992 - Golden in color with an intense
aroma of toasty oak and apricot fruit. Very concentrated flavors, very
oily to rich with an outstanding balance and long, long, lingering finish.
- JACQUES PRIEUR, CLOS VAUGEOT 1990 - Ruby red color with a lovely
black cherry aroma with a hint of mint. Seductive fruit, rich and ripe.
Still young and perfectly structured with an incredible long silky finish.
- E.GUIGAL, COTE ROTIE, BRUNET BLONDE 1986 - Red Brick in color with
some amber. With an aroma of truffles, earth and black fruit. Mature and
ready to drink with ripe fruit and soft tannins with a long finish.
- CAPARZO BRUNELLO diMONTALCINO LA CASA 1988 - Red Garnet color with
tobacco and leather aromas and black fruit. Beautiful rich fruit, still
very young but very elegant with a long balanced finish. A classic Brunello.
- CHATEAU LATOUR 1990 - Red-purple in color with a spectacular bouquet
of cassis and oad. Rich fruit and still quite tannic. A spectacular wine
that is perfectly balanced with a finish that seems to last forever. A
classic Latour.
- CHATEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD 1986 - Red-purple in color with a classic
lead pencil aroma. Still very young with intense fruit flavors and lots
of tannin with a long, long finish. A great Mouton. This wine can last
and keep getting better for at least 20 years.
- LA JOTA WINERY CABERNET SAUVIGNON, 11th ANNIVERSARY 1992 - Purple
color with an intense black fruit aroma and oak. Very powerful, a big blockbuster
wine with rich fruit and very tannic with a long finish.
- LOLONIS WINERY, ORPHEUS PETITE SIRAH 1991 - Purple red color with
an intense peppery black fruit aroma. Very powerful with rich spicy fruit
and very full bodied with a long finish.
- CAYMUS CABERNET SAUVIGNON SPECIAL SELECTION 1986 - MAGNUM. Garnet
red color with a spectacular aroma of cassis and oak with a beautiful ripe
fruit flavor, very expansive on the palate , still very young with a very
long finish. A great Caymus.
- SILVER OAK WINERY, CABERNET SAUVIGNON, ALEXANDER VALLEY 1986 - Brick
red color showing some amber around the edges with a distinct minty aroma
with some underlying cassis. Very elegant with soft supple fruit . Still
has some firm tannins with a long elegant finish.
- CHATEAU LEOVILLE LAS CASES 1986 - Ruby red color with a beautiful
cassis aroma and violets. Very concentrated fruit that is very ripe and
lush. Still very young with firm tannins, with an outstanding long finish.
One of the best Leoville Las Cases I have ever had.
- BEAULIEU PRIVATE RESERVE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 1990. Ruby red color
with a cassis earthy aroma that is somewhat closed. Very chunky, not very
elegant. One dimensional with a slightly short finish.
- CHATEAU CLIMENS, BARSAC 1990 - Gold in color with an intense aroma
of coconuts, tropical fruits and apricots. Very rich and luscious with
a great creamy texture with a mind boggling finish. A very young but great
Chateau Climens fruit aroma that keeps developing in the glass. Very powerful
rich fruit still slightly closed. Very young and tannic with a staggering
long finish. Needs another decade to develop. A classic.
