Coconut Shrimp in New Smyrna Beach: Starter, Dinner, or Treehouse Snack

You have a table booked at the 1946 Restaurant, or you just climbed the stairs into the Treehouse, and someone asks the usual question: what are we getting to share? At Norwoods in New Smyrna Beach, the coconut shrimp is one of the easiest answers. It sits alongside the Bacon-Wrapped Scallops and the She-Crab Soup among our most popular starters, and it is built to be passed around the table.

What Comes on the Plate

The Coconut Shrimp Appetizer on our menu is coconut battered shrimp served with two dipping sauces: a pineapple-mango sweet chili and a coconut curry. The two sauces pull in different directions, which is the point. The sweet chili leans bright and fruity, the curry leans warm and savory, and it is worth trying a piece in each before you pick a favorite.

Both sauces come out of the same scratch kitchen as everything else at the 1946 Restaurant, where every sauce and dressing is made in-house daily. Head Chef Dennis Dolbow runs that kitchen, and the coconut shrimp gets the same treatment as the steaks and the fresh catch.

Appetizer or Dinner? How to Order Coconut Shrimp at Norwoods

If the shrimp is the reason you came, skip the starter and order the Coconut Shrimp Dinner from the entrées. It is a full dozen coconut battered shrimp with the same two sauces, so you get the dish as your meal instead of a few pieces to split.

If you want it as a starter, the appetizer is the better fit for a table that plans to move on to a hand-cut aged steak or fresh local seafood. Ordering it next to our Bacon-Wrapped Scallops is an easy way to try two of the starters guests order most.

Where to Eat It: 1946 Restaurant, Treehouse Bar, or Roots Bar

The 1946 Restaurant is our original dining room and the natural place for coconut shrimp to open a full dinner. Reservations are recommended there, especially on weekends.

The Treehouse Bar is the multi-level bar built into the historic oak out front, with live music daily, and the full 1946 Restaurant menu is served up in the branches too. It is 21 and up. If you want a drink that keeps the tropical theme going, the Tiki Treehouse is a coconut rum cocktail built with banana, pineapple, and lemon.

Guests under 21 are welcome at Roots Bar, the laid-back, all-ages lounge at street level directly beneath the Treehouse.

What Wine Goes With Coconut Shrimp?

If you would rather have wine than a cocktail, ask your server. Our team can suggest a wine to go with house specialties, drawing on the sommelier-curated list and the wines by the glass poured from our draft wine system. The sweet chili and the curry call for different things, so tell them which sauce you keep reaching for. You can read more about the program on our wine bar page.
